Alcorn Director of Athletics Derek Horne Releases Statement on Cancelation of Sports
LORMAN, Miss. – Alcorn State University Director of Athletics Derek Horne responded to the announcement from the Southwestern Athletic Conference and the NCAA that all remaining seasons and championships have been canceled.

“The decision to cancel the remainder of the seasons was a difficult one, and we understand the disappointment and sadness from our student-athletes, coaches and fans,” Horne said. “Every decision that’s made as administrators in collegiate athletics is in the best interest of the student-athletes. Although we don’t want sports to end, it’s in the best of interest of the health, safety and welfare of our student-athletes, coaches and others associated with our programs at this time and for the greater good.”

The SWAC announced last week that all winter/spring sports activities have been canceled through the end of the academic year. The NCAA also canceled all remaining winter and spring championships. The sports affected by this at Alcorn included baseball, softball, men’s and women’s track & field and men’s and women’s tennis, as well as spring seasons for fall sports.

“I appreciate the leadership of Commissioner Charles McClelland and the entire conference office for their collaborative decision-making throughout this very challenging process and addressing the very serious world-wide issue of COVID-19. We support the decision made,” Horne said. “Alcorn State University and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics are committed to assisting our student-athletes as they work to fulfill their academic requirements for the spring semester.”

Alcorn extended Spring Break by one week through Sunday, March 22. The University is open for business and academic and campus operations are continuing.

The spring football game, along with all activities this semester have either been canceled or postponed.

Athletics supports the efforts from the University as it closely monitors the global spread of COVID-19. Click here<> for more information from the University.
