MEAC Announces Men’s Basketball Weekly Honors, Presented by Coca-Cola

NORFOLK, Va., Jan. 19, 2021 — Morgan State University junior guard Malik Miller has been tabbed Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, presented by Coca-Cola, it was announced on Tuesday, and redshirt senior guard Anthony Tarke of Coppin State University has been named the Defensive Player of the Week. Coppin State freshman guard Nendah Tarke and Delaware State freshman guard Martaz Robinson were named co-Rookies of the Week.

Miller (G, 6-4, 191, Jr., Washington, D.C.) had back-to-back double-doubles as the Morgan State Bears went 1-1 against crosstown rival Coppin State. He averaged 25.5 points, 12.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.0 blocked shots over the two contests. Miller exploded for a career-high 30 points on 11-for-18 shooting from the floor along with 12 rebounds and four assists in Sunday’s loss to the Eagles, after tallying 21 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and three steals in a victory over Coppin State the day before.

Anthony Tarke (G, 6-6, 220, r-Sr., Gaithersburg, Md.) averaged 14.0 rebounds to go along with his average of 19.0 points in the two-game series against rival Morgan State on Saturday and Sunday. In Saturday’s loss, he had 16 rebounds and two steals on the defensive end to go along with 17 points and five assists. In Sunday’s win, he had 12 rebounds, five steals and three blocked shots along with 21 points. This is his third straight week capturing MEAC Defensive Player of the Week honors and fifth time overall so far this season.

Nendah Tarke (G, 6-4, 190, Fr., Gaithersburg, Md.) averaged 9.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.0 steal in Coppin State’s split with Morgan State. In Sunday’s game, he scored 11 points with four rebounds, two assists and a steal, a day after garnering seven points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal. This is his third time winning or sharing MEAC Rookie of the Week honors this season.

Robinson (G, 6-2, 180, Fr., Owings Mills, Md.) averaged 8.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 0.5 steals in two games against Norfolk State. In Saturday’s contest, he had seven points, three rebounds and two assists, followed by seven points, five rebounds, four assists and one steal on Sunday.


Pinky Wiley (Delaware State) averaged 21.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists in losses to Norfolk State over the weekend. On Sunday, he had career highs in points (29) and 3-pointers (7) while surpassing the career 1,000-point mark (currently 1,009). His seven treys matches the MEAC high for this season.

Joe Bryant (Norfolk State) averaged 13.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.7 steals as the Spartans posted victories over North Carolina Wesleyan and Delaware State (twice). In the second contest against the Hornets, he had 19 points, seven rebounds, six assists, two steals and one blocked shot.

J.J. Matthews (Norfolk State) averaged 13.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.5 blocked shots and 1.0 assist in two games during the week for the Spartans.
